How to Begin Your Research

When you first start out, think about what you know and what you need to know. Do you need to identify companies? Understand an industry? Need background on a product or service? These resources are selected as good places to begin but are not intended to be exhaustive. If you need to take it a step further, ask an information professional, an expert in the field or even brainstorm with a colleague.

Tips to Finding Very Specific Business Information in Google

Given below are sample searches that will help you focus your Google search results.

Sample Question: Need to learn about the craft beer brewing industry

  • Note: To find background information on an industry or statistics, start with a professional or trade association.  To find an industry association, try a search similar to the one below

Google Advanced Search:

Find web pages that have all of these words: beer statistics

Search within a Domain or Website: org

Sample Question: Need to understand applications of RFID (radio frequency identification systems)

  • Note: For expert opinions on a topic or technology that you need to quickly understand, look for White Papers on the web.

Google Advanced Search:

Find Web Pages that have all of these words: RFID

Find Web Pages that have this exact phrasing: White Paper

Sample Question: Just type RFID

  • Use Google's Enhanced Website Search the Tail. This site takes a search word and then ORGANIZES the output into commom categories to help you sort through the results.

Look at the left side of the page to see result categories.Examples are: RFID Tag, RFID Technology, RFID Chips, RFID Readers, and What is RFID?

BizJournals
Local business coverage for top major metro areas. Can look for specific news or set-up RSS feeds by specific industries. Or buy the Book of Lists for specific cities.

Hoover's
Hoover's Free Version has basic information on 12 million worldwide companies and in-depth profiles of more than 40,000 public and private companies.

Kompass
In the free version find international companies by name, industry or location. The data is brief yet this is a good tool to identify target companies.

Thomas Register
U.S. companies by name or product type.

Thomas Register Global
Global companies by name or product type.

Non Profit Industry Information

GuideStar
Includes nonprofit profiles for 1.7 million organizations and 3.1 million IRS Form 990s. Some data is free but not all.

National Center for Charitable Statistics
National clearinghouse of nonprofit data for the U.S. and includes industry statistics.

The Foundation Center
Has foundation and grant writing information.
