Conduct Policy

The Walker Management Library seeks to create a welcoming and comfortable environment for our users. The library is a place for active learning and quiet reflection. Mutual courtesy and respect among users and staff are essential to promoting the educational mission of the library.

The Library has adopted several policies to assist in creating this environment for everyone - Food and Drink; Noise and Disruption; Study Rooms. More conduct related issues such as abuse of property, personal behavior, misuse of computers, and children in the library are covered by the library-wide conduct policy.

Food and Drink

  • Non-alcoholic drinks are permissible in the library in covered containers
  • Food is discouraged for several reasons:
    • Disturbance of others (noise, odors, spills)
    • Damage to library materials, equipment and facilities
    • Attraction of vermin
    • Owen spaces where food can be consumed with fewer constraints and less impact are readily available.
  • Packaged, wrapped, non-messy items, consumed carefully and thoughtfully, and disposed of properly, may be acceptable.
  • Any problems resulting from food and drink should be reported to a library staff member on duty.

Noise and Disruption

  • Some noise is inevitable in a library environment. The second floor is more of a quiet area than the first floor, where library staff will be assisting users.
  • Cell phones should be turned off or set to vibrate while in the library. Calls should be taken and/or made from outside the library open spaces.

Study Rooms

  • Study & conference rooms may be reserved by current students, faculty and staff of the Owen Community. Study rooms are governed by the Honor Code and are self-policed by users. Rooms are reserved using the Online Reservation System, which is maintained by Owen IT

  • Rooms 1 – 5 (Library 1st Floor)
CMC has first priority to these rooms.
If CMC is not utilizing the rooms any Owen community member may reserve them, in accordance with the guidelines for rooms 6- 21.

  • Rooms 6 – 21 (Library 2nd Floor) & 8:10 Café Study Rooms
Students have first priority to these rooms.
Rooms may be reserved by students up to 24 hours in advance.
Room reservations are for groups only.  No student may reserve a room for individual use.  Individuals are allowed to use study rooms when they are unoccupied but groups can take over a room in use by an individual.  Room reservations are for a maximum of three hours per person per day.  Reservations for a team can be pooled to exceed this limit.
On special occasion, Faculty, Academic Programs, or Administrators may reserve blocks of study rooms up to 6 months in advance. However, rooms may not be reserved in advance for regular and recurring meetings.

  • Library Conference Room
After 6:00 PM weekdays and on weekends the conference room may be reserved by the Owen community up to 24 hours in advance.
During regular business hours, reservations may be requested through library staff.

  • Please delete unneeded room reservations as a courtesy to others.
The Library’s food and noise policy apply to the study rooms. With permission, food may be allowed in the Library Conference Room.
Room reservations not used by a group within 15 minutes of the start time are forfeit.

  • When users are finished with a room, they should clean the room (including removing food items), return any moved chairs or equipment, turn out the lights and leave the door open.

  • Policies and procedures associated with study room use and reservations are developed and approved by the Owen Student Government Association. The Library has the responsibility for administering these policies and procedures.
