Access to Restricted Resources

Many of the electronic resources provided through the Walker Management Library as well as the Heard Library are licensed to be used only by Vanderbilt students, faculty and staff. To comply with these license agreements, access is often restricted to the computer network IP address range associated with Vanderbilt.

On-Campus: When selecting such restricted resources from the library's webpages, users with an on-campus network address will automatically be connected to the resource.

Off-Campus: Users with an address originating from an external internet service provider such as AOL or Intermedia@Home will either be prompted for a VUnet ID/password or for an Owen ID/password, ensuring that the user is currently affiliated with Vanderbilt. All attempts to use restricted resources are routed through the Library's proxy service to authenticate for IP address first and then ID as needed.

Troubleshooting Tips for Off-Campus Access

The recommended software and settings for using the Walker Management Library's website and electronic resources through the proxy server are listed below.

Browsers: We recommend that you have Microsoft Internet Explorer 5.0 or higher or Firefox 1.0 or higher. Keep in mind that the newer versions of browsers not only have newer features, but they also often fix bugs, especially those dealing with Internet security.

Javascript: JavaScript must be enabled.

Cookies: Cookies must be enabled. Many of the research databases require cookies to work.

Java: Java is recommended to be enabled. Some research databases use Java, therefore you might be required to have Java enabled to use those resources.

Resolution: The site looks best on a screen which displays at least 256 colors (16 million or true color are better) and has a resolution of at least 800x600. However, a resolution of 1024x768 will minimize scrolling and make the screen easier to read, especially if you have a monitor larger than 15 inches.

Firewalls

Firewalls often block off-campus access to the libraries' research databases and e-journals.

If you are behind a firewall and require access to the Walker Management Library's resources or other Vanderbilt University resources, your network administrator will need to create a firewall rule that specifies the VU Libraries' proxy server as a "Trusted Site." There are 2 addresses you can provide to your network administrator:

    • www2.owen.vanderbilt.edu
    • www.library.vanderbilt.edu

Network administrators should be able to allow access to our entire proxy server port range via these addresses.

If you have questions regarding the configuration of your local firewall, please contact your network administrator. Network administrators requiring further information may contact Library Information Technology Services (LITS) at 615-322-7073.
